2023 Germany 2 Euro coin 'Charlemagne'. Germany has issued a 2 Euro coin with the theme of Charlemagne who was born 1275 years ago, in the year 748. He became king of the Franks at the age of 21 and became emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in the year 800. He is seen as one of the most important rulers Western Europe has ever known. Charlemagne knew better than anyone how important it was to unite Western Europe into one great nation, with the current European Union following in his footsteps. On the face of the coin two pictorial elements are shown being merged, namely Charlemagne's personal monogram and the octagon of Aachen Cathedral. These two motifs merge in the design of this beautiful coin. Furthermore, his name Karl der Große (Charlemagne, or Charles the Great) and the year of issue, 2023, are shown.
