Product Description

Karl Friedrich Hieronymus (Freiherr von Münchhausen) was a German man from Adel. He was a captain of the Russian army that fought against the Turks. At the age of 40 he retired to his estate in Bodenwerder where he told his guests the most wonderful stories. He told his wonderful stories to his friend Rudolf Erich Raspe, among others. Rudolf Erich Raspe sold his stories to newspapers and they were published in several languages, this did not promote the relationship between the two friends. He was eventually seen as a liar because his stories were twisted, while his stories had to serve humour and entertainment. It has been 300 years since Karl Friedrich Hieronymus (Freiherr von Münchhausen) was born which is why it was decided to issue a 20 Euro coin. On the face of the coin a Baron is seen sitting on a cannonball. Jumping from cannonball to cannonball allowed the Baron to enter the city and open the gate from the inside. Karl Friedrich Hieronymus has often told this folk tale (the cannonball). In an arc around the coin is the text '300. BURTSTAG FREIHERR VON MÜNCHHAUSEN' (300th birthday Freiherr von Münchhausen). On the reverse of the coin is the text 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland' (Federal Republic of Germany) and the value indication of 20 Euro is displayed. The famous German Federal Eagle is centred on the reverse of the coin. The coin is made of Sterling Silver (Ag 925), which is printed under the eagle (silber 925). The coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
