Product Description

Diogenes (412 - 323 BC) was one of the most cynical philosophers known. He was born in Sinope, now northern Turkey, which at that time was a Greek colony. After his family was involved in a scandal he had to leave Sinope. He went to Athens where he became a pupil of Antisthenes, a follower of Socrates. Because of his cynical attitude and his mentality he was an exceptional man who attracted little attention. In the word Cynicism is the Greek word for a dog, at that time an innocent animal that does not attract attention. According to history he lived in a kind of barrel and his only property was a piece of clothing, a plate from which to eat and an old mug from which to drink. The famous story is that Alexander the Great searched for him in Athens and after he found Diogenes asked him ôcan I do something for you?ö The answer from Diogenes was characteristic: ôYes, please take a step to the side, you are blocking the sun.ö On the face of the coin there is a picture of Diogenes with a dog. In addition there is a picture of the barrel in which he lived. Above the barrel you can see the year 2017. On the left side of the coin is the Greek text Diogenes and 412 - 323 BC. On the reverse of the coin, in Greek, is printed Greek Republic and the year 2017. In the centre you can see the Greek Coat of Arms. The coin is packed in a luxury package and is supplied with a numbered certificate. The issue of this coin is limited to just 2,000 copies.
