Product Description

Alcaeus (Alkaios) is a Greek poet who lived around 600 BC. The poems that Alcaeus wrote were written according to traditional Monodic lyricism. This was a special change technique in which both unstressed and stressed were used. Alcaeus was born on Lesvos and came from a family that fought against the ruling tyrants of the time. Unfortunately, few works by Alcaeus have been preserved, but despite this he is known as one of the leading poets of ancient Greece. Greece has decided to issue a 10 Euro coin about Alcaeus so that he is not forgotten among the current population. On the face of the coin is an image of Alcaeus. On the left is the year 2019 whilst on the right his name, Alcaeus, is written in the Greek language. On the reverse of the coin is a man and woman who represent Sappho and Alcaeus. This image is a copy of a terracotta placard dating from around 475 BC. In the middle of the coin the value indication of 10 Euro is written in Greek. The coin is presented in a beautiful cassette and the circulation of the coin is only 1,200 copies!
