Greece 2 Euro 2018 Kostis Palamas

This particular 2018 Greek 2 Euro coin honours the Greek poet Kostis Palamas. Kostis Palamas is considered the most important Greek poet of his time and was, in fact, the founder of the New Athenian School. He was also the inspiration of modern Greek literature. Palamas, born in 1859 in Patras, filled his ideas with memories from the Greek War of Independence. His oeuvre consists of 16 different works. Kostis Palamas died in 1943 when Greece was occupied by Germany. To the bewilderment of the occupying forces, hundreds of thousands of Greeks sang the Greek anthem during his funeral in Athens. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of Kostis Palamas, Greece has issued a special 2 Euro coin. On the coin Kostis Palamas is depicted looking obliquely to the left. On the left side of the coin is the Greek text "Greek Democracy" with the name Kostas Palamas in Greek below. Furthermore, the year 2018 is shown.
