Product Description

Perhaps the most famous border that Europe has ever known was The Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was more than 45 kilometres long and separated West Berlin and East Berlin. When the Second World War was over Berlin was divided into four occupation zones. Russia was given one of these four zones to temporarily manage. The other countries that were allocated a part were France, Britain and the United States. West Berlin wanted to introduce a new currency, the Deutsche Mark. This currency was introduced to prevent a new wave of inflation and to stop the black trade. Russia absolutely did not agree with this and saw it as a threat. It was, therefore, decided to build a wall to protect the border and the currency. Italy has issued a special 5 Euro coin to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall. On the face of the coin the front of the Berlin Wall is symbolically represented. The Berlin Wall had many murals (graffiti), hence this coloured 5 Euro coin. The country name 'REPUBLICA ITALIANA' (Republic of Italy) is also shown encircling the image of the wall. The year of issue, 2019, is displayed at the top. On the reverse of the coin a Peace Dove, that symbolically breaks through the wall, is depicted. In circular form around the coin is the text '30° ANNIVERSARIO DELLA CADUTA DEL MURO DI BERLINO' (30th Anniversary Fall of the Berlin Wall). The value indication of 5 Euro can be seen in the centre of the coin. The coin is of the highest quality (Proof) and is presented in a beautiful, numbered cassette.
