It is 100 years ago that the Italian cyclist Fausto Coppi was born. Fausto Coppi (15/09/19 - 02/01/1960) was a versatile rider and possessed numerous talents in various fields. Fausto Coppi was nicknamed champion of champions 'Il Campionissimo'. Fausto Coppi won the Tour de France twice and won the Tour of Italy five times. He was the first rider to win both the Tour de France and the Tour of Italy. He also became world champion in 1953! Fausto Coppi had one rival - his countryman Gino Bartali. An Italian couldn't stay neutral at that time, you were either for Fausto Coppi or for Gino Bartali. Fausto Coppi died from Malaria at the age of 40. On the face of the coin Fausto Coppi is portrayed looking to the right. The country name 'Republica Italiana'(Republic of Italy) is written in a circular form. To the outer edge of the coin forty links of a bicycle chain are depicted in a circle shape - these symbolize the years of his life. At the bottom right is the name of the designer V. de Seta. On the reverse of the coin Fausto Coppi is shown standing on the pedals of his bicycle. Forty cogs of a gear-wheel are shown in a circular form, which again symbolize the years of his life. His name Fausto Coppi and the dates 1919 - 2019 are also displayed. On the l eft is the value indication of 5 Euro, whilst at the bottom is the text 'ROSA - LA SUA MAGLIA' (Pink is his shirt). The letter "R" at the bottom stands for the coin of Rome. The coin is mounted in an attractive coincard with a circulation of only 8,000 copies.
