Italy 5 Euro 2019 Florence Cathedral

The 'Duomo of Florence'is the theme of this beautiful 5 Euro coin. In the Middle Ages Florence was one of the most important cities in Italy. A Cathedral was to be built that radiated the power of Florence. The construction of this huge Dom (Cathedral) began in the year 1296. The dome of the Florence Cathedral is central to this coin. In 1418 a competition was organized for the construction of this dome, which was won by Filippo Brunelleschi. The construction of the Cathedral was completed in the year 1472 after almost 200 years! The cathedral dome is displayed on the face of the coin. At the top is the text 'REPUBBLICA' (republic) whilst at the bottom, under the dome, is the text 'ITALIANA' (Italy). On the reverse of the coin a detail from the cantor (choir) of Luca della Robbia is depicted. The choir was removed from the Duomo of Florence in 1688 and had to make way for a large music company at the wedding of Grand Duke Ferdinand. At the top is the text 'ITALIA DELLE ARTI' (arts of Italy). The year 2019 is shown to the left centre of the coin with the value indication of 5 Euro at the bottom of the coin. To the right centre is the word 'FIRENZE' (Florence). The coin is presented in a beautiful cassette.
