Raphael of Urbino (Raffaello Sanzio) was an Italian painter. Raphael was born in 1483, in Urbino where his birthplace can still be visited! In his childhood home his father's works can still be admired together with a painting by Raphael himself, called 'La Muta'. Urbino is an old town in Italy that received UNESCO status in 1998. Raphael got his inspiration from the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Raphael was a brilliant portrait painter, he mainly painted his works with oil paints. Raphael was only 37 years old, but painted many masterpieces in his life. Due to his death, 500 years ago, Italy has decided to issue a 5 Euro coin in his memory. On the obverse of the coin is a self-portrait of Raphael which was painted around 1506. The country name 'Repubblica Italiana' (Republic of Italy) is shown encircling the image. This painting hangs in The Uffizi Galleries in Florence. On the reverse of the coin is a fragment of the fresco 'The School of Athens'. The fresco was painted around 1510 and is on display in the Vatican Museum. His name 'Raffaello' is displayed at the top of the coin. The value indication of 5 Euro and the years 1520 and 2020 can be found in the centre of the coin. The coin is presented in a beautiful blister and was sold o ut in no time by the Italian mint.
