Italy 5 Euro 2021 'Caravaggio'

Italy has issued a 5 Euro coin with the theme 'Caravaggio'. The Italian artist Caravaggio, (full name Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio), was born in Caravaggio, a small village near Milan, in the year 1571. So Caravaggio literally owes his name to his birthplace. Caravaggio was orphaned at the age of 11 and was apprenticed to the Italian painter Simone Peterzano. When Caravaggio was 22 years old he left for Rome where he started work as a student of Cesari. However, his talent was immediately discovered by important clients and he was soon commissioned to produce paintings for them. He became one of the most influential artists of the late 16th century. From Rome and Naples to Malta and Sicily he travelled widely. Caravaggio was born 450 years ago which is why Italy issued this 5 Euro coin. On the face of the coin is a self-portrait of Caravaggio. The country name REPUBBLICA ITALIANA (Italy) is also displayed. On the reverse of the coin is a detail of the painting 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt'. Furthermore , his name, CARAVAGGIO, the value indication of 5 Euro and the years 1571 - 2021 are displayed. The coin is presented in a beautiful case and is supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
