Product Description

Dante Alighieri died 700 years ago, in the year 1321. To commemorate this, Italy has issued this special 5 Euro coin. Dante, along with Boccaccio and Petrarch, had a major influence on the Cultural Renewal of his time. This led to more Humanism and modern culture. Dante is not only an icon of literature, but also very influential on medieval culture. He has masterfully described this in his famous works. Internationally, his works are still regarded as the greatest literary masterpieces. In the year 1307 Dante wrote the work 'Inferno'. It is a journey that Dante experienced in the year 1300 and what he described as hell (inferno). The face of the coin shows three devils, one of which is depicted with black-coloured wings. Furthermore, both fire and ice are depicted (it used to be suggested that hell was cold). Additionally, the value indication of 5 Euro is displayed along with the years 1321 - 2021. The text 'E QUINDI USCIMMO A RIVEDER LE STELLE' (and then we go out to see the stars) is also shown. On th e reverse of the coin is a self-portrait of Dante with the country name REPUBBLICA ITALIANA (Italy). The coin is presented in a beautiful case and is supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
