Product Description
This special 5 Euro coin from Latvia 2018 has as its theme the Curonian Kings (Kings of Courland). This name is somewhat confusing because they were not kings, but a population group living in seven different villages in Courland who enjoyed special privileges. These privileges date back to 800 years ago and involved special permits for hunting and fishing. But ordinary work was also part of their duties such as interpreters, blacksmiths and postmen. The Kings of Courland were also obliged to participate in the battlefields of the Livonian Order. The last privileges were only lifted around 1930! On the face of the coin, to the left of the Peniki-Column, a woman in traditional costume is depicted. On the right side of the coin a man with a sword in his hand is represented. Furthermore, the names of the seven free villages, being Kaliji, Ziemeli, Nyvurdalli, Konini, Pliki, Draguni and Sauslali, are shown. These are Latvian names, but in Old German the names of the villages are much more easily recognizable. At the bottom of the coin are the words "Kursu Konini" (Kings of Courland). On the reverse of the coin is a Rider on a horse, with a feather in his hat, a sword by his side and a banner in his hand. At the centre of the coin, the original document with the seal is depicted. Furthermore, the year 2018 and the value indication of 5 Euro are shown. Strangely enough, the Latvija name is not on the face or reverse of the coin, it is only seen in the edge lettering! The coin is presented in a luxury package and is delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
