Product Description
'Samogitia' (in Lithuanian Zmaitija) is one of the five provinces of Lithuania. Samogitia, which is located in western Lithuania and borders the Baltic Sea, was considered the last pagan area in Europe. After hundreds of years of struggle its people converted to Christianity in the 15th century. In the year 1413 the first churches appeared in Samogitia. The people in the province speak Samogitic, a dialect within the Lithuanian language. Almost only Lithuanians (99.5%) live in Samogitia, which makes the province one of the most ethnic areas of Lithuania. On the face of the coin the Samogitian coat of arms is depicted. The crest shows a bear with a collar, under this bear is the text 'Patria Una' (one homeland). To the left is a knight leaning on his sword and on the right a woman holding an anchor is shown. Below the knight is the year of issue, 2019. At the top of the coin is the country name 'LIETUVA' (Lithuania) below which is the name of the province 'Zemaitija' (Samogitia). A limited amount of this special 2 Euro coin is also available in a Coincard. The quality of the Coincard is BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) and the circulation is just 5,000 copies.
