Product Description

Samogitia (in Lithuanian 'Zmaitija') is one of the five provinces of Lithuania, it is located in western Lithuania and borders the Baltic Sea. Samogitia was considered the last pagan area in Europe. After hundreds of years of struggle people from Samogitia converted to Christianity in the 15th century. In the year 1413 the first churches appeared in the province. The people from Samogitia speak Samogitic, a dialect within the Lithuanian language. The population of Samogitia are almost all Lithuanians (99.5%) and is, therefore, one of the most ethnic parts of Lithuania. On the face of this coloured 2 Euro coin the coat of arms of Samogitia is shown. This crest shows a bear with a collar, under this bear is the text 'Patria Una' (a homeland). On the left is a knight leaning on his sword whilst on the right is a woman holding an anchor. Below the knight is the year of issue, 2019. At the top of this coloured coin is the country name 'Lietuva' (Lithuania) and at the bottom of the coin is the name of the province 'Zemaitija' (Samogitia). This coloured coin is packed in a coin capsule.
