Product Description
'Uzgavenes' is a typical Lithuanian celebration and is also known as Shrove Tuesday. It is a celebration that is celebrated throughout Lithuania. It is celebrated 7 weeks before Easter. Uzgavenes is a celebration that should see the ending of winter and the ushering in of spring. What characterizes Uzgavenes is the parade of 'masqueraders' - costumed people playing musical instruments. The masqueraders carry masks from mythology, they have to protect the people against the spirits that try to destroy their crops in the winter. During this festival pancakes are eaten because the more pancakes you eat the healthier and richer you become. They also eat a stew with barley, peas and pigs tails during Uzgavenes. The most important thing about this day is the fight between a person who depicts spring, called Kanapinis, and a man called Lasininis who portrays the winter. Of course, the person who depicts spring always wins. At the end of Uzgavenes the winter image 'More' is set on fire to indicate that spring has won and the winter is over in Lithuania. On the face of the coin a character from 'Uzgavenes', dressed in a costume representing a horse, is depicted. The country name LIETUVA (Lithuania), the year 2019 and the value of the currency, €5, are also shown. The mint mark is also displayed. On the reverse of the coin are a number of attributes that are characteristic of Uzgavenes: in the centre is 'More', the image of winter, surrounded by a beggar, a crane, a witch, Lasininis the symbol of winter, Kanapinis the symbol of spring and a goat playing an accordion. The text of the celebration UZGAVENES and the slogan of the celebration: 'ZIEMA, ZIEMA, BEK IS KIEMO' (winter, winter is going away). The coin is presented in a luxury package with a numbered certificate.
