Product Description

On February 19, 1817 William III (in French Guillaume III) was born. From March 17, 1849 until his death on November 23, 1890 he was Grand Duke of Luxembourg and King of the Netherlands. William III was a special man, sometimes he did not care about anything. When he walked into the palace with muddy boots he refused to clean it! He was married to Sofie van Wurtemberg. This was not a good marriage. After the death of Sofie William III married Queen Emma. They had one daughter û Princess Wilhelmina. The Luxembourg constitution stated that only male successors could become Grand Duke. William III only had the later Queen Wilhelmina as his successor and since 1890 another branch as the successor of William III has continued. In the year 2017 it is 200 years since William III was born and to commemorate this Luxembourg has issued a special 2 Euro coin. On the right side of the coin is an image of William III with the text æGuillaume IIIÆ and the year 1817. On the left side of the coin Grand Duke Henri is portraye d along with his name "Henri". At the top of the coin the year 2017 is displayed vertically and at the bottom of the coin is the text æGrand-Ducs du LuxembourgÆ.
