Product Description

The theme of the 2019 Maltese 2 Euro is the Ta 'Hagrat temples. It is the fourth coin in the series of seven special 2 Euro coins that Malta is issuing from 2016 to 2022. The subject of this series is the Maltese prehistoric monuments. The Ta 'Hagrat temples, in Mgarr, are one of the oldest temples in Malta and date from the Ggantija phase. This phase was approximately between 3600 to 3200 BC (now known as BCE - before the common era). To build the temple of Ta 'Hagrat, coralline limestone was used - this type of stone belongs to the oldest type of stone that is to be found on the surface of the Maltese islands. The temple complex consists of a total of three temples. The smaller of the temples is adjacent to the larger temple on the north side. In comparison with the other temples in Malta, these buildings can be called relatively small. The most extraordinary find of all time is a scale model of this temple. It can be concluded from this that careful thought was given to the construction of this impressive temple. The coin shows an image of the entrance to the Ta 'Hagrat temples. On the top right of the coin is the text 'TA HAGRAT TEMPLES' beneath which are the dates 3600 - 3000 BC. At the bottom of the coin is the country name MALTA along with the year 2019. The 12 stars of Europe are shown in the outer ring of the coin. This is the Coincard version with mint mark. To the left of the year is the Cornucopia (Horn of Plenty) mint mark. Only 20,000 coins with mint marks have been struck! The coin is mounted in an attractive coincard.
