Product Description

2021 Malta 2 Euro coin 'Tarxien Temples' Coincard. Malta issues a total of seven special 2 Euro coins with the subject of the Maltese Prehistoric Monuments. The theme of the 2021 Maltese 2 Euro is the Tarxien Temples which are one of the older temples in Malta. The earliest temple dates from the Ggantija phase, which was about 3600 BC (now known as BCE). The other temples of the complex were built during the Tarxien phase, between 3600 and 3200 BC, after which the temples are named. The temples were discovered in the year 1914 when farmers tried to plough their land around forests, but each time encountered hard stones. Under the direction of the geologist Themistocles Zammit, the entire complex was then excavated. Since the year 1980 the Tarxien Temples are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The face of the coin shows the entrance to the two upper apses of the Tarxien temples. At the top of the coin is the name TARXIEN TEMPLES and the years 3600 - 2500 BC. Furthermore, the country name Malta and the year of issue, 2021, are displayed. To the left of the year is the mint mark Cornucopia (Horn of Plenty). Only 20,000 mint-marked coins have been struck! The coin is mounted in a beautiful Coincard.
