Monaco 2 Euro 2020 Prince Honoré III

Prince Honoré III (Honoré Camille Léonor Grimaldi) born on 10th November, 1720 reigned as Prince of Monaco from the age of thirteen. Prince Honoré III was supported until the age of eighteen by his uncle, Anton Karel Grimaldi, who acted as his regent. Prince Honoré III ruled Monaco for longer than any other ruler in the history of the Grimaldi's, he ruled Monaco for 60 years! Prince Honoré III had very good relations with the French kings, Louis XV and Louis XVI, which gave the Grimaldi's a lot of land and noble privileges. During the French Revolution Monaco was occupied and in 1793 Prince Honoré III was imprisoned. He died two years later in a Parisian dungeon at the age of 74. Most of the Grimaldi family lived in captivity, or under very harsh conditions, in France. Only 21 years later, in 1814, Prince Honoré IV became the ruler of Monaco. The face of the coin features a portrait of Prince Honoré III, holding a unique scroll. The country name Monaco is shown on the right. The circulation of this coin is only 15,000 copies.
