Portugal 2 Euro 2019 Ferdinand Magellan Coincard BU

Ferdinand Magellan, in Portuguese Fernão de Magalhães, was a Portuguese explorer just like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Ferdinand Magellan led the first voyage by sail around the world! In doing so he revealed the existence of a connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific and thereby proved that the earth is round! At the time this was seen as the biggest news that ever appeared. Ferdinand Magellan made the most spectacular journeys in the early 16th Century. Between 1519 and 1522 Ferdinand Magellan's fleet consisted of five colossal ships weighing between 75,000 and 110,000 kilos! In total there were 237 people on these five ships. Ferdinand Magellan set sail for the Cape Verde Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Patagonia, San Julian and Tierra del Fuego, among others. The strait between Tierra del Fuego and mainland South America was later named the 'Straits of Magellan'. On the occasion of the great historical event 'The Earth is round' Portugal has honoured Ferdinand Magellan by issuing a special 2 Euro coin about him. The coin shows an image of Ferdinand Magellan together with his Portuguese name 'FERNAO DE MAGELHAES'. The text 'CIRCUM NAVEGACAO' (circumnavigation), and the years 1519 and 2019 are also shown. The coin is mounted in a Coincard where the text seen on the coin is also displayed. On the ack of the coincard the technical data of the coin is shown. The quality of the coin is BU (Brilliant Uncirculated).
