Portugal 2 Euro 2019 Madeira

It has been 600 years since Tristão Vaz Teixeira, Bartolomeu Perestrelo and João Gonçalves discovered Zarko Madeira and Porto Santo. Prince Hendrik called the best sea navigators and cartographers together to discover more land towards the West African coast. When Madeira was discovered in 1419 there was a lot of forest on the island (laurel). Because of the strategic location of the island Prince Hendrik immediately ordered colonization. The first settlers arrived in Madeira around 1419. Nowadays Madeira is seen as a flower island where many indigenous species occur exclusively on the island. The Madeira geranium (Geranium maderense) is a gorgeous plant that grows well not only in Madeira but also in the Netherlands. On the face of the coin is the text '600 anos do Descobrimento da Madeira and do Porto Santo' (600 years of discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo) written in a circle on the coin.
