Product Description
Portugal has issued a 5 Euro coin that refers to a period in history, namely the Renaissance. The Renaissance literally means rebirth and dates back to the years 1300 to 1600. It is the period that followed the Middle Ages. Florence is seen as the first city to be built during the Renaissance and 'Carpe Diem' (Seize the Day) was the motto of the time. Rich and powerful people in Florence commissioned artists and architects to make the city more beautiful. This created a huge enrichment in the city where artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Donatello and Vasari created many works of art that are still admired today. The Renaissance is a time when art and culture really flourished, the bloody Middle Ages were over and it was time to develop humanity. The Renaissance spread from Florence further and further into Italy and eventually spread throughout Europe. On the face of the coin is the text 'curva loxodromica petrus nomius'. Petrus Nominus designed the Loxodromic Curve in 1537, which was decisive for the navigation and cartography of the globe. On the reverse is the text 'Renascimento' and the value indication 5 Euro. The Europa star and the coat of arms of Portugal are also displayed. The coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
