Product Description

On 6th November, 1520 King Manuel I officially opened the Portuguese public postal service. Delivering mail in 1520 was costly and was done almost exclusively by noble families. Mail was delivered by horse and buggy and it could sometimes take months for certain shipments from Northern Portugal to be delivered to Southern Portugal. As the postal business grew the cost of sending mail became cheaper and more people started sending mail. Today the Portuguese Post has 12,983 employees! On the face of the coin is a postman on his carriage drawn by three horses. Furthermore, the value of 5 Euro is shown at the top of the coin while the years 1520 and 2020 are shown to the left. On the reverse of the coin are five hands and six envelopes, below these is the text '500 anos do Correio' (500 Years of the Post). The coin is packaged in a printed coin holder.
