Product Description
Portugal issues a coin every year with the theme 'Protected animal species'. This year, Portugal will focus on the common dolphin, Delphinus delphis. It is one of the most common dolphin species but populations are declining drastically due to hunting, accidental trapping in large fishing nets and habitat degradation. Fortunately, there are still millions of common dolphins, although numbers are declining. Dolphins are social animals that live and hunt in large groups. Due to their intelligence and great interest, dolphins often visit people in the water and swim with boats. Dolphins have almost no natural predators because they can manoeuvre very well in the water and they communicate with each other by means of click-like and whistle-like sounds. Even sharks and killer whales don't often go after dolphins because it is mainly a useless action. On the face of the coin a dolphin is depicted with the country name, Portugal, below together with the year 2020 and the coat of arms of Portugal. On the reverse of the coin are four dolphins, one of which is swimming with its mother. Additionally, the text 'Golfinho-comum' (common dolphin) is shown, below which is the value indication of 5 Euro. The coin is packaged in a printed coin holder.
