Product Description

This is the third special Euro coin of the Portuguese Sport Coins series. These special Sport Coins have a Nominal value of 7.5 Euros. The Portuguese Athletes seen on these coins have been of great significance for Portugal and the rest of the world. The theme of this third Portuguese silver 7.5 Euro coin is Joaquim Agostinho. Joaquim Agostinho was one of the best Portuguese professional cyclists that Portugal has ever known. He participated 13 times in the Tour de France and managed to finish no less than eight times in the top ten. He won a total of 5 stages, the most famous of which was the Alpe d'Huez. Joaquim Agostinho fell heavily on 30th April, 1984 in the Tour of the Algarve when he hit a dog. He finished the race but realized at the finish that he needed medical attention. Unfortunately, the necessary operation could only be carried out in Lisbon. On the way to Lisbon he fell into a coma in the ambulance and subsequently died on 10th May, 1984. Despite his severe injury and the huge pain that must have been part of it, he turned out to be a man of character who gritted his teeth to finish the stage. In honour of his special achievements Portugal has issued a special Euro coin with a nominal value of 7.5 Euros. On the face of the coin Joaquim Agostinho is depicted, braving a mountain, standing on the bicycle pedals. His name 'Joaquim Agostinho' and his years of his birth and death (1943 - 1984) are also shown. On the reverse of the coin three cyclists are pictured together with the country name, Portugal, the value indication of 7.5 Euro, and the year 2019. A small image of the Portuguese coat of arms is also depicted. The coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
