Product Description

Ferdinand Magellan, in Portuguese Fernão de Magalhães, was a Portuguese explorer just like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Ferdinand Magellan led the first voyage by sail around the world! In doing so he revealed the existence of a connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific and thereby proved that the earth is round! At the time this was seen as the biggest news ever. Ferdinand Magellan made the most spectacular journeys in the early 16th Century between 1519 and 1522. Ferdinand Magellan's fleet consisted of five colossal ships weighing between 75,000 and 110,000 kilos! In total there were 237 people on these five ships. Ferdinand Magellan set sail for the Cape Verde Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Patagonia, San Julian and Tierra del Fuego among others. The strait between Tierra del Fuego and mainland South America was later named the Straits of Magellan. On the occasion of the great historical event 'The Earth is Round', Portugal is issuing four 7.5 Euro coins that together form a series. The first coin in this series refers back to the departure in 1519. On the face of this 7.5 Euro coin is a portrait of Ferdinand Magellan next to a sailing ship in which he set course. His Portuguese name 'FERNAO DE MAGELHAES' is shown at the top of the coin. In the lower right of the coin is the word 'PARTIDA', meaning 'departure' along with the year 1519. On the reverse of the coin a sailing ship with five sails is depicted. This illustrates the entire fleet of Ferdinand Magellan. The text '2019 PORTUGAL - CIRCUM NAVEGACAO (circumnavigation) 1519-1522 encircles the ship. The value indication of 7.5 euros is also displayed. The coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
