Product Description

Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) was a Portuguese explorer just like Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. Ferdinand Magellan led the first sailing trip around the world. In doing so he revealed the existence of a connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, proving that the Earth is round. At the time this was seen as the biggest news to have ever appeared. Ferdinand Magellan made the most spectacular voyages in the early 16th century between 1519 and 1522. Ferdinand Magellan's fleet consisted of five colossal ships weighing between 75,000 and 110,000 kilos! In total there were 237 crew on these five ships. Magellan set sail for the Cape Verde Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Patagonia, San Julian and Tierra del Fuego. The strait between Tierra del Fuego and the mainland of South America was later named the Straits of Magellan. Magellan also discovered the penguins. On the face of this 7.50 Euro coin two penguins and a sailing boat are depicted. His name is also displayed at the top of the coin. The reverse of the coin shows the route that he sailed. The year of issue, 2020, the country name Portugal, and the value indication of €7.50 is also displayed. The coin is packaged in a printed coin holder.
