Portugal BU 2017

The BU sets of Portugal have for many years had a specific Portuguese theme. The theme of the BU set of Portugal 2017 is the Coimbra pottery. Coimbra is a major Portuguese city located in the middle of Portugal. The first pottery from Coimbra dates back to the 15th century, influenced by India and China, but since the 17th century it developed its own style with various colours, the emphasis being on blue and white. At the end of the 18th century seasonal workers took the pottery in saddlebags to the south of Portugal where the strong pottery was very popular. It was even used as a means of payment!
