Product Description

Filippo Lippi (1406-1469) was born and raised in Florence, Italy. Filippo Lippi became an orphan at a young age and spent his childhood in the Carmelite monastery in Florence. In his youth he learned to draw and paint in the monastery and soon the exceptional qualities he possessed were seen. He got his inspiration from the works of Tomasso Masaccio. Every painter has his own teacher and Filippo Lippi brought the tricks of the trade to the well-known artist Sandro Botticelli. During that time artists were given commissions and one of his best-known commissions are the frescoes in the church of Santa Margherita in 1459 that can still be admired today. Cosimo de Medici commissioned Filippo Lippi in 1434 to paint a portrait of 'Madonna with child and two Angels'. This painting is still in Florence at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This coloured 2 Euro coin represents exactly the detail of the painting where the woman (Madonna) is depicted with her child. Furthermore, the country name San Marino is displayed with the name Filippo Lippi below. On the left of the coin is the year 1469 and at the bottom the year 2019 is shown. This coloured 2 Euro coin from San Marino with the theme 'Filippo Lippi' is packed in a coin capsule.
