Product Description

Filippo Lippi (1406-1469) was born and raised in Florence, Italy. Filippo Lippi became an orphan at a young age and spent his childhood in the Carmelite monastery in Florence. In his youth, in the monastery, he learned to draw and paint and soon his exceptional qualities were observed. He got his inspiration from the works of Tomasso Masaccio. Every painter has his own teacher and Filippo Lippi brought the tricks of the trade to the well-known artist Sandro Botticelli. Painters were given commissions, especially at that time, and one of his best-known commissions are the frescoes in the church of Santa Margherita in 1459 that can still be admired today. Cosimo de Medici commissioned Filippo Lippi, in 1434, to paint a portrait of the 'Madonna with child and two Angels'. This painting is still in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. A detail of this painting is shown on the new 2 Euro coin that San Marino has issued to commemorate his death 550 years ago. The woman (Madonna) with her child are depicted. Furthermore, the country name San Marino is displayed with the name Filippo Lippi below. On the left side of the coin is the year 1469 whilst at the bottom the year 2019 is shown. Only 54,150 coins were minted this year! This coin, as described above, is packed in a printed coin holder.
