Product Description

In order to popularize and distribute numismatic collecting, the Spanish mint has issued a series of coins in memory of the 'Historia de la Navegación' (history of navigation). To conclude this series, it was decided to display one of the most important events in Spanish history, the first circumnavigation of the world, on a 10 Euro coin. 239 men left Seville under the leadership of Fernando de Magallanes (Magellan) in 1519 to sail the world! The fleet consisted of 5 giant sailing ships. After the death of Magallanes, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command and completed the journey. Only the ship of Elcano, the Victoria, and just 18 of the 239 Europeans survived the harsh trip. This journey is still known today as one of the bravest sailing trips in the history of Spain. On the face of the coin are five sailing ships braving the sea, this was the entire fleet that departed from Seville in 1519. At the bottom of the 10 Euro coin is the text 'V CENTENARIO DE LA VUELTA AL MUNDO' (500th anniversary circumnavigation of the world). At the top the value indication of 10 Euro is shown while on the right the coat of arms of Juan Sebastián Elcano is depicted. To the left of the value indication is the mint mark of Spain. On the reverse of the coin are two portraits, one of Juan Sebastián Elcano and one of Fernando de Magallanes. On the right is a sculptural work called Carlos V. At the top of the coin the country name España (Spain) is shown. At the bottom of the coin are the names Elcano and Magallanes. The coin is presented in a beautiful cassette.
