Product Description
The Spanish mint honours the first sailing voyage around the world by issuing no fewer than 4 different 10 Euro coins, 1 copy each year. This is the second coin from this series of four. 239 men left Seville under the leadership of Juan Sebastián Elcano in 1519 to circumnavigate the world. The fleet consisted of 5 giant sailing ships. Only 18 of the 239 men survived the gruelling voyage. Only his sailing ship, the Victoria, managed to complete the journey. This voyage is still recognised today as one of the bravest sailing trips in the history of Spain. The face of the coin shows two sailing ships being attacked by sea monsters. Seafarers used to believe strongly in sea monsters, and when a ship went down it was often the work of one of these mythical creatures. At the bottom of the 10 Euro coin is the text 'V CENTENARIO DE LA VUELTA AL MUNDO' (500th anniversary of the voyage around the World). On the right is the mintmark of Spain. On the reverse of the coin are two portraits, one of Juan Sebastián Elcano and one of Fernando de Magallanes. On the right is a sculptural work called Carlos V. At the top is the country name España (Spain). At the bottom of the coin are the names Elcano and Magallanes. The coin is presented in a beautiful cassette.
