Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) was born on 18th May, 1920 in Wadowice in Poland. On 16th October, 1978 he was proclaimed as the 264th Pope and ruled the Catholic Church until his death on 2nd April, 2005. Pope John was a very dedicated man and spoke no less than 11 languages! He was beatified on 1st May, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI and canonized on 27th April, 2014 by Pope Francis. He was the first Polish clergyman to be elected to Pope and govern the Catholic Church and he was much loved. On the obverse of the coin Pope John Paul II is portrayed alongside the Wadowice Cathedral, where he was baptized. The house where he was born is shown next to it. The eight-pointed star refers to the Virgin Mary, to whom Pope John Paul II was devoted and dedicated his pontificate. His name (PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II) is displayed at the top left. On the right the year of his birth, 1920, is shown next to the current year, 2020. At the bottom of the coin is the country name 'CITTA DEL VATICANO' (Vatican).
