Product Description
This special coloured 2018 Greek 2 Euro coin honours the Greek poet Kostis Palamas. Kostis Palamas is considered the most important Greek poet of his time and was, in fact, the founder of the New Athenian School and was the inspiration of modern Greek literature. Palamas, born in Patras in 1859, filled his ideas with memories from the Greek War of Independence. His oeuvre consists of 16 different works. Kostis Palamas died in 1943 when Greece was occupied by Germany. To the astonishment of the occupying forces, hundreds of thousands of Greeks sang the Greek national anthem during his funeral in Athens. In the year marking the 75th anniversary of the death of Kostis Palamas Greece has issued a special 2 Euro coin. On this coloured 2 Euro coin Kostis Palamas is portrayed looking diagonally to the left. On the left side of the coin is the Greek text which translates as 'Greek Democracy' with the name 'Kostas Palamas', also in Greek, below. The year 2018 is also shown. The coin is packaged in a coin capsule.
