Product Description

Manolis Andronicos (1919-1992) is one of the best known and most famous Greek archaeologist. As an archaeologist you dream of being fortunate enough to experience a unique excavation. Manolis Andronicos just went one step further and discovered the Macedonian royal tombs in Vergina. In a completely intact tomb he found a golden box containing the bones of King Philippos II. These can be admired in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. King Philippos II was king of Macedonia from 359 to 336 BC. The Macedonian Empire was in the north of Greece. King Philip II conquered, among others, Thessaly and Thrace. His much more famous son, Alexander the Great, conquered large parts of Asia and Egypt. It is 100 years since Manolis Andronicos was born and this coloured 2 Euro coin shows what he looked like. Manolis Andronicos is depicted on the coin at a later age. To the left of the coin, in an arc together with the dates 1919-1992, is his name Manolis Andronicos, in Greek. The year 2019 is also shown in the left centre. On the right side of the coin is some Greek text which translates as 'Greece Democracy'. This coloured coin is packed in a coin capsule.
