Product Description

This heavily silvered 2018 Maltese 2 Euro coin has as its theme the Mnajdra Temples. It is the third coin in the series of seven special 2 Euro coins issued by Malta from 2016 to 2022. The subject of this series is the Maltese prehistoric monuments. The Mnajdra temple is one of the best preserved megalithic temples in Malta. The temple actually consists of three temples that were built at different times: the northern temple from 3600 BC (now known as BCE - before the common era), the middle around 3150 BC and the southern temple around 2500 BC. The shape of the temple resembles a cloverleaf with walls consisting of two parallel walls two metres apart. Some of the megalithic limestone blocks are more than 6 metres high! 500 metres away is the Hagar Qim temple, which is about the same age as the Mnajdra and Ggantija temples, but is a singular temple. The temples are near the sea and from them the rock island Filfla is visible. On this heavily silvered 2 Euro coin the entrance to the Mnajdra Temple is depicted. At the top right of the coin is the text MNAJDRA TEMPLES with the years 3600 - 2500 BC below. At the bottom of the coin is the country name MALTA and the year 2018. In the outer ring of the coin are 12 stars. This heavily silvered 2 Euro coin is packaged in a plastic coin capsule.
