Product Description

The theme of this seventh coin of the series with the theme Dutch World Heritage is "Schokland". The former island Schokland is a unique place in the Netherlands. Schokland, which has a rich history, originated as an island about 10,000 years ago. There was a constant battle with the sea and the Zuiderzee (now the IJsselmeer) was eroding more and more land. After the flood of 1825 it was decided to evacuate the island, which became final around 1860. Ironically, since then, not a single metre of island has been lost. After the North-East polder was founded in 1942, Schokland fell dry. On aerial photographs the contours of the island are still visible. It has been on the World Heritage List of UNESCO since 1995. On the face of the coin is an image of the former island of Schokland, surrounded by the polder landscape of the Noord-Oostpolder (North-East polder). On the right side is the value indication of 5 Euro. In the outer ring of the coin is the year 2018 along with the text "Schokland Dutch World Heritage" (in Dutch). Between the year and the text four images that indicate the history and culture of Schokland are depicted. These are a fish, a mammoth, a fishing boat and a footprint. On the reverse of the coin King Willem Alexander is portrayed looking to the right. Around this are a number of abstract lines that are in harmony with the lines of the polder landscape on the face of the coin. In the outer ring of the coin, in Dutch, is the text "Willem Alexander King of the Netherlands". The coin is mounted in a beautiful coincard and this coincard is again packaged in a beautiful small, signed and numbered envelope on which the day of issue is prominent.
