Product Description

In 1903, the American Wright Brothers first flew in a self-built, motorized aircraft. This aircraft was called The Flyer. It wasn't long before the Netherlands also wanted to enter the airspace. In 1919 Anthony Fokker, together with a number of wealthy investors, founded the Nederlandsche Vliegtuigenfabriek (Netherlands Aircraft Factory). In the same year, Frits Fentener van Vlissingen and Albert Plesman, among others, decided to set up the Royal Aviation Society for the Netherlands and its Colonies. This makes KLM the oldest airline that still uses the same name! The blue and white aircraft of KLM with their 100-year-old history are world renowned! In the early days of aviation aircraft had propellers. During the second World War jet engines were developed and used in aircraft, something that is indispensable nowadays. To celebrate that the Dutchmen entered the airspace themselves these beautiful Euro coins have been issued. On the face of the coin the map of the Netherlands in shown in relief. Superimposed on the map are 2 planes. One is an old propeller aircraft, the Fokker DXI, the other is a Boeing 737 which can be recognized by its 2 jet engines. The Dutch text '100 Jaar Nederlandse Luchtvaart' (100 years of Dutch aviation) together with the year 2019, the value indication of 5 Euro and the mint marks are printed around the outside of the coin. King Willem Alexander is shown in relief on the reverse of the coin. The Dutch text 'Willem Alexander Koning der Nederland' (Willem Alexander King of the Netherlands) encircles this portrait. The coin is mounted in a Dutch numbered coincard.
