Product Description

The Dutch Mint issues a special commemorative coin every year that have the theme of the Dutch World Heritage - all have UNESCO status. This year the eighth coin of the series is issued, namely 'Droogmakerij de Beemster' (The Beemster Polder). Droogmakerij de Beemster was a gigantic undertaking in the seventeenth century. The Netherlands built high dikes in the province of North Holland around a very large stretch of water. The water that was between the dikes was then pumped away by the use of mills. For the Dutch population dikes and mills are normal, but for most people in the world they are very impressive. A repeat of the flood disaster of 1953 must be prevented at all costs. 26% of the land in The Netherlands is below sea level and dikes are crucial for the protection of the Dutch population. The 'Beemster' €5 indicates how vulnerable the Netherlands is without dikes. On the face of the coin King Willem Alexander is portrayed looking to the right. Surrounding this image is the text 'WILLEM-ALEXANDER KONING DER NEDERLANDEN'. On the reverse of the coin the section of North Holland that has been drained is depicted. Furthermore, 5 icons, namely, a cow, a farm, a fruit tree, a church and Phi (the sign of the Golden Section) are shown interspersed within the text 'NEDERLANDS WERELDERFGOED 2019 DROOGMAKERIJ DE BEEMSTER'. The value indication of 5 Euro is also displayed. This coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
