Product Description

The Carnation Revolution, in Portuguese 'Revolução dos Cravos', is a military coup that took place without any violence on 25 April 1974. Mainly soldiers from the progressive left groups took over power from the autocratic Estado Novo regime. This coup took place 45 years ago, which is why Portugal is releasing this coin. This revolution marked the end of Portugal as a Colonial power. The soldiers put red carnations in their guns to indicate that they did not want to use violence. It put an end to over 40 years of defending Portuguese colonial interests in Asia and Africa, where much violence was used. The political struggle for power between the left and the right led to Portugal becoming a parliamentary democracy. To commemorate this Carnation Revolution Portugal has issued a 5 Euro coin. On the face of this coin a Carnation is depicted beneath which is the text '25 de abril' (April). The years 1974 and 2019 are shown with '45 anos' (year) between them. At the bottom of the coin is the text 'LIBERDADE DEMOCRACIA', (freedom democracy). On the reverse of the coin is the country name, Portugal, together with the value indication of 5 Euro. 5 shields, with 5 'eyes', creatively make up the number 25 which indicates the date (25th) of the Carnation Revolution. The coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
