Product Description
Raphael van Urbino (Raffaello Sanzio) was an Italian painter. Raphael was born in Urbino in 1483, where the house he was born in can still be seen! In his parental home are some of his father's works and a painting, called 'La Muta', by Raphael himself. Urbino is an old town in Italy that received UNESCO status in 1998. Raphael got his inspiration from the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Raphael was a brilliant portrait painter who mainly painted his works with oil paint. Raphael was only 37 years old, but in his life he painted a huge number of masterpieces. Due to his death, 500 years ago, San Marino decided to issue a 2 Euro coin in his memory. A detail of the painting 'La Muta' is depicted on the 2020 San Marino special 2 Euro coin. At the bottom of the coin is his name 'Raffaello' and on the right the country name 'San Marino' is shown. The dates 1520 and 2020 are also displayed. The coin is packed in the standard San Marino blister and has a circulation of only 54,000 copies.
