Product Description

The Vatican officially became an independent state on 11 February 1929. The treaty for this was signed by the Laterans and the Concordat. In the Lateran Treaty the Mussolini government recognized the Vatican City as an independent state, and the Concordat arranged for Catholicism to be given a special status in Italy. This actually meant the end of a bloody battle that had raged for years. For centuries the ecclesiastical state owned almost the whole of central Italy! The popes used to have a lot of military power and had entire armies, that fought for the faith, to expand and defend their territory. On the occasion of this 90th anniversary the Vatican has decided to issue a special 2 Euro coin. The coin shows Pope Pius XI, the first official Pope of the Vatican. He was made Pope on 6th February, 1922 and signed the treaty on 11th February, 1929. The coin shows Pope Pius XI looking to the left with the palace of St. John of the Laterans, and the characteristic obelisk, in the background! Around the portrait of Pius XI is the text 'STATO DELLA CITTA DEL VATICANO'. The years 1929 and 2019 are shown within a scroll at the bottom of the coin. The coin is presented in a light blue package. The circulation of this coin is only 69,000 copies.
