Product Description
Raphael of Urbino (Raffaello Sanzio) was an Italian artist. Raphaël was born in 1483 in Urbino, where his birthplace can still be visited. In his parental home works by his father can be admired along with a painting by Raphaël himself. Urbino is an old town in Italy that was granted UNESCO status in 1998. Raphaël was inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Raphaël was a brilliant portrait painter, he painted his works mainly with oil paint. Raphaël was only reached 37 years of age but he painted a huge number of masterpieces during his life. Because of his death, 500 years ago, the Vatican has decided to issue a 2 Euro coin in his memory. The coin shows both a detail of his self-portrait and a detail of the portrait of the 'Sistine Madonna', which hangs in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. This coin, as described above, is presented in a light-grey packaging, of which the circulation is only 67,000 copies.
