Manolis Andronicos, (1919-1992), is one of the best known and most famous Greek archaeologist. As an archaeologist the dream is to be allowed to experience a unique excavation. Manolis Andronicos just went one step further and discovered the Macedonian royal tombs in Vergina. In a completely undamaged tomb he found a golden box containing the bones of King Philippos II. These can be admired in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. King Philippos II was king of Macedonia from 359 to 336 BC. The Macedonian Empire was in the north of Greece. King Philip II conquered, among others, Thessaly and Thrace. His much more famous son, Alexander the Great, conquered large parts of Asia and Egypt. It is 100 years ago that Manolis Andronicos was born, which is why Greece has decided to issue a special 2 Euro coin with him as the subject.Manolis Andronicos is depicted on the coin at an older lifetime. To the left of the coin his name Manolis Andronicos, together with the years 1919-1992, is shown in Greek, in a semicircle. The year 2019 is shown to the left of his image. On the right side of the coin is the text 'Greece Democracy' in the Greek language. The coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
